A coaching action plan should specify one observable behavior, the practice needed, the support owner, and the evidence that will decide the next step. Start from a reviewed interaction pattern. A low overall score does not tell an agent what to do differently on the next contact.

Level AI describes coaching action items. AWS documents improvement goals linked to coaching sessions. Those workflow descriptions do not guarantee that a goal is specific, fair, or achievable; managers still need to construct and review the plan.

How should a score become a behavior goal?

Identify the decision or action that explains the finding. Replace “improve empathy” with a context-specific behavior the reviewer can observe, such as acknowledging the customer's stated concern before explaining an available resolution. Avoid prescribing identical wording when the customer situation calls for a different response.

Check the opportunity before writing the goal. If the relevant policy is unclear or the required tool is unavailable, assign a process correction rather than an agent-development task. Record disagreements about the underlying finding and resolve them through the agreed QA review process.

What belongs on the action-plan card?

FieldWhat to write
Observed patternReviewed examples and applicable context
Desired behaviorAn action a reviewer can recognize
PracticeA realistic exercise and feedback method
SupportKnowledge, access, or manager help required
Review evidenceEligible future examples and decision rule
OwnershipAgent, coach, review date, and dependencies

Use the card as an editorial template, not a claim that every product has matching fields. Keep one primary behavior per plan when possible. Several unrelated goals can make it unclear which practice produced the observed change.

How should practice and support be chosen?

Use an exercise that contains the same decision as the observed problem but does not simply repeat the original transcript. Ask the agent to explain the choice and an exception. Provide the approved reference and a chance to ask questions before evaluating another live example.

Write manager commitments alongside agent actions. A plan to use a new procedure is incomplete if the procedure has not been published. Track dependencies separately so an overdue content change is not mistaken for a missed development commitment.

What should count as completion?

Agree on the evidence before practice starts. Define the eligible situations, the reviewer, and what happens when no relevant contact occurs during the review window. Completion should reflect the behavior demonstrated, not only attendance at a meeting or acknowledgement of feedback.

Retain the original plan and record any revision. If the behavior remains difficult, examine whether the goal, practice, or operating conditions need to change before repeating the same instruction. Continue with the coaching follow-up guide or review how to assemble session evidence.

What is a complete example of a behavior action plan?

The following illustrative plan starts from reviewed replacement contacts where the next owner was omitted. It is a management template, not a product-generated or validated intervention.

Plan fieldIllustrative content
BehaviorBefore closing an eligible replacement request, state who owns the next action and check the customer's understanding.
PracticeRehearse one ordinary request and one exception with the trainer; explain when escalation is required.
SupportThe knowledge owner resolves conflicting ownership instructions before practice is assessed.
EvidenceManager reviews later eligible contacts using the same criterion and retains the excerpt and agent response.
Next decisionClose for demonstrated behavior, continue for incomplete evidence, or revise when the diagnosis changes.

Write the exclusion rule too: a disconnected contact may not provide a closing opportunity. Record such cases without treating them as a pass. Ask the agent to restate the goal in their own words and identify an exception. If that explanation reveals an ambiguous rule, resolve the rule before using the action plan as an individual performance judgment.

What are the limits of this guide?

Sources were checked October 20, 2026. This template was not tested for learning effectiveness and does not define employment policy. Product fields, scheduling, and reporting require confirmation. Agent performance can reflect workload, systems, and policy constraints; a coaching plan should acknowledge those conditions rather than attributing every quality finding to individual skill.
