Test knowledge-grounded assist against an approved answer set, including missing and conflicting information, before measuring search-time savings. Grounding means linking an answer to a defined body of information. It does not by itself establish that the information is current, applicable, or safe to use for this customer.
Level AI describes knowledge-based answers with citations. Google Cloud documents proactive knowledge query and answer suggestions. Evaluate those documented approaches with your own policies; neither description proves answer correctness for an individual deployment.
What must the knowledge base contain?
Start with an inventory of policies, troubleshooting instructions, escalation paths, and ownership. Assign each document a scope and review date. For every decision that differs by product, country, subscription, or customer status, make the condition explicit. Ask the vendor how those distinctions survive ingestion and retrieval.
Create a small reference set with approved answers and acceptable alternatives. Include questions that use different wording from the document, questions requiring two sources, and requests whose answer depends on information the agent has not yet collected. An assistant should ask for the missing condition rather than quietly invent it.
Which failure cases belong in the demonstration?
- Outdated policy: replace an instruction and check whether the old version still appears after the promised refresh window.
- Conflicting documents: provide two plausible answers with different scopes and inspect whether the limitation is visible.
- Missing answer: ask about an undocumented exception and require a useful fallback.
- Restricted knowledge: verify that agents receive only material allowed for their role.
- Misleading context: change the customer request halfway through and check whether the answer changes appropriately.
These are proposed acceptance tests, not claims that every listed product implements the required behavior. Record the answer text, cited passage, document version, elapsed time, and reviewer decision for each test.
How do you judge a citation rather than its appearance?
Ask a reviewer to open the cited material and locate the exact support for the answer. A link to a long handbook is less useful than a passage the agent can check quickly. Reject answers that use a correct document to justify a conclusion the document does not support.
Keep retrieval failure separate from generation failure. In the first case, the relevant information never reaches the assistant; in the second, the assistant receives it but answers incorrectly. The distinction helps the implementation team decide whether to repair content, retrieval settings, or response instructions.
When should you add automatic suggestions?
Consider proactive suggestions after agents can reliably request and verify answers. Monitor irrelevant prompts and interrupted workflows during the live trial. For the broader interface evaluation, see real-time agent assist. For onboarding use, see reducing new-agent ramp time.
How should you choose between on-demand and proactive knowledge help?
Use agent-requested help when the question requires a condition the system cannot reliably infer. Consider proactive help for repeatable situations with a clear trigger and approved answer. Level AI describes cited knowledge answers; Google Cloud documents proactive suggestions. Those sources justify examining each approach, while the same acceptance cases should decide fit.
| Illustrative case | Acceptable answer behavior | Reject when |
|---|---|---|
| Returns policy differs by purchase channel | Ask which channel, then cite the applicable section. | The answer silently assumes a channel. |
| Old and new refund rules overlap | Show which effective date and transaction condition apply. | The newest file is treated as universally applicable. |
| No approved goodwill exception exists | State the gap and route to the authorized owner. | The assistant invents a concession. |
| Policy is visible only to a specialist | Respect the agent's access and show a permitted escalation. | A citation reveals restricted content. |
For each case, store the source version and the expected conditions before the demonstration. Review source retrieval, answer support and task relevance separately. Report supported answers divided by answerable cases, and safe abstentions divided by unanswerable cases. Keep failed retrievals and missing outputs visible. These are proposed measures, not published product scores.
What are the limits of this guide?
This is a procurement test plan, not a security assessment or product benchmark. Public sources checked October 20, 2026 do not establish your permission model, refresh latency, supported file types, or answer accuracy. Confirm those details with the supplier and your knowledge owners. A cited answer remains subject to review when a policy is ambiguous or an exception requires human authorization.
