Evaluate onboarding AI against time to independent, quality-assured proficiency, with comparable cohorts and explicit checks for overreliance. Define the work a new agent must complete correctly before choosing software. A shorter training calendar is not useful evidence if supervisors must repeatedly repair the resulting contacts.
Level AI describes coaching sessions with interaction evidence and action items. Its separate Agent Assist offering describes in-call guidance. Evaluate these as different interventions: one supports practice and reflection, while the other supports the contact currently in progress.
How should you define proficiency?
Choose milestones with training and operations together. Examples might include completing a standard case accurately, recognizing an exception, documenting a resolution, and knowing when to escalate. Agree on the quality rubric and the amount of supervision permitted at each milestone.
Measure elapsed days and the number of relevant opportunities. An agent assigned mostly simple contacts is not directly comparable to an agent handling difficult exceptions. Keep assisted proficiency distinct from independent proficiency: both may matter, but they answer different questions.
What belongs in an onboarding evaluation plan?
| Milestone | Evidence | Guardrail |
|---|---|---|
| Find an approved answer | Correct source and explanation | Agent can explain the applicable condition |
| Complete a standard contact | Reviewed recording and accurate case record | No unresolved critical quality finding |
| Handle an exception | Correct escalation and customer explanation | No invented policy commitment |
| Retain a skill | A later comparable task | Performance persists after prompts change |
Treat the table as a proposed evaluation method. Set acceptance thresholds for your operation rather than adopting a vendor's training-time percentage. Record the denominator for every result, including agents who leave the cohort or do not receive enough relevant contacts.
How can you separate assistance from coaching?
During a live conversation, assistance should help the agent act correctly now. Afterward, coaching should explain why the action was appropriate and offer practice for the next contact. Ask the supplier to show that entire loop using one realistic case, including agent questions and manager follow-up.
Reserve some practice exercises for independent explanation. The aim is not to withdraw useful tools from production, but to identify whether the agent understands the decision or merely follows an unexplained instruction. Document areas where continued assistance is an intentional job design choice.
How should you compare onboarding cohorts?
Use comparable starting experience, trainers, queues, policies, and schedules where feasible. If random assignment is impractical, state the differences and avoid claiming causation from a simple before-and-after chart. Include supervisor minutes, correction work, repeat contacts, and quality alongside time to proficiency.
Use the knowledge grounding checklist for answer quality and the QA-to-coaching guide for longer-term follow-up.
What are the limits of this guide?
No onboarding program or product was tested. Product pages checked October 19, 2026 establish described features, not a guaranteed ramp-time outcome. Training design, staffing, customer mix, manager capacity, and policy changes can alter results. Confirm packaging and integrations before a pilot, and report cohort differences explicitly when the evaluation cannot isolate the effect of AI assistance.
